Village History

The Village of Downers Grove is located in west suburban DuPage County, only 25 miles from Chicago. Downers Grove was founded by Pierce Downer in 1832. He built the village using trees from a huge grove adjacent to the pristine Illinois prairie.

When the railroad established a depot in town, growth was inevitable. Today, Downers Grove has become a virtual portal to the world and a strategic location for business. O'Hare and Midway airports are only minutes away and offer international access. Rail service transports commuters to work and play and carries manufactured goods to destinations across the country. Finally, Downers Grove is located at the crossroads of a network of interstate highways such as 294, 55, 355 and 88. Our accessibility and superior transportation linkage makes Downers Grove an attractive place to live and work.

Downers Grove provides an ideal location for its residents. It is a well-planned community with a stable population base of nearly 50,000, an average age of 39 and an estimated mean household income of $81,784. Downers Grove is home to award winning education districts, abundant recreation opportunities, unique shops and restaurants and low property taxes - a village with a proud heritage and vibrant future.
